When you might need it

  • Your child is around their first birthday and hasn't seen a dentist yet.
  • You can see white or brown spots, or a hole, in a tooth.
  • Your child complains of toothache or avoids chewing on one side.
  • Back teeth have deep grooves that food gets stuck in (a fissure sealant can help protect them).

How many visits, how long

A children’s check-up takes about 20 minutes, fluoride varnish about 15 minutes and a fissure sealant about 20 minutes per tooth. Saturday mornings are kept mainly for children, so the waiting room is calm for them.

What happens, step by step

  1. 1

Dr Tara says hello and lets your child look at the chair and the instruments first.

  2. 2

She gently checks your child's teeth and gums, and you can stay for the whole visit.

  3. 3

She shows you and your child how to brush, and answers your questions.

  4. 4

If useful, a fluoride varnish (15 minutes) or fissure sealants (20 minutes per tooth) are applied.

  5. 5

She tells you when to come back.

Aftercare

  • After fluoride varnish, avoid hot drinks and hard food for the rest of the day, and brush as normal the next morning.
  • Sealants need no special care. Avoid very sticky sweets, and keep brushing twice a day.
  • Help your child brush until they can do it well on their own.

This is general information. Your dentist will tell you what applies to your own treatment.
