When you might need it

  • You can see a hole or dark spot in a tooth.
  • A tooth hurts when you eat something sweet, hot or cold.
  • Food keeps catching in the same place.
  • A tooth has chipped, or an old filling has come loose.

How many visits, how long

A filling is usually done in one visit of about 40 minutes per tooth. If more than one tooth needs a filling, Dr Tara will tell you how to plan the visits, and you’ll have the cost in writing first if the total is over ₹2,000.

What happens, step by step

  1. 1

Dr Tara examines the tooth and, if needed, takes an X-ray that you see on the screen.

  2. 2

The tooth is numbed so you shouldn't feel pain.

  3. 3

The decayed part is removed and the tooth is cleaned.

  4. 4

The filling is placed in layers and set with a special light.

  5. 5

The filling is shaped and polished, and Dr Tara checks that your bite feels right.

Aftercare

  • Wait until the numbness wears off before eating, so you don't bite your cheek or tongue.
  • Mild sensitivity to hot, cold or biting is common for a few days.
  • Come back if your bite feels high, the filling feels rough, or pain gets worse instead of better.

This is general information. Your dentist will tell you what applies to your own treatment.

Questions

Will the filling hurt?

We numb the tooth first, so you shouldn't feel pain during the filling. The area stays numb for a couple of hours afterwards.

How long does a filling last?

It depends on the size of the filling, where it sits in your mouth and how you look after it. Regular check-ups let us spot wear early.

Why are my teeth sensitive after a filling?

Mild sensitivity to hot, cold or biting is common for a few days. If it is strong, or lasts more than a couple of weeks, come and see us.
