- Time
- 40 min per visit
- Visits
- 2, about a week apart
When you might need it
- A tooth has a very large filling or has broken.
- A tooth has had root canal treatment and needs protecting.
- A tooth is worn, cracked or badly shaped.
- You have a gap from a missing tooth that you'd like to close (a bridge uses the teeth either side).
How many visits, how long
A crown takes two visits of about 40 minutes each, about a week apart. A bridge follows the same pattern. Dr Tara will tell you at the first visit if your case needs anything extra.
What happens, step by step
- 1
Dr Tara examines the tooth, takes an X-ray if needed, and explains whether a crown or bridge is right.
- 2
You choose between a metal-ceramic and a zirconia crown, and receive a written estimate.
- 3
At the first visit the tooth is numbed and shaped, and a mould is taken for the lab.
- 4
A temporary crown protects the tooth for the week.
- 5
At the second visit the final crown is tried, checked for fit and bite, and cemented in place.
Aftercare
- Avoid sticky and very hard food on the temporary crown. If it comes off, keep it and call us.
- Brush normally, and clean between the teeth and around the crown every day.
- Come back if the crown feels high, loose, or sore to bite on.
This is general information. Your dentist will tell you what applies to your own treatment.

What is the difference between a metal-ceramic and a zirconia crown?
A metal-ceramic crown has a metal base with a tooth-coloured ceramic layer. A zirconia crown is made of a strong tooth-coloured ceramic with no metal. Dr Tara will explain which suits the tooth.
Why are two visits needed?
At the first visit the tooth is shaped and a mould is taken for the lab. The crown is made over the following days and fitted at the second visit, about a week later.
What do I wear in between?
A temporary crown protects the tooth. Avoid sticky and very hard food on that side until the final crown is fitted.
