When you might need it
- You have a deep toothache, especially a throbbing one that wakes you at night.
- A tooth stays painful to hot or cold long after the hot or cold is gone.
- There is swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gum near a tooth.
- A tooth has darkened, or has a deep hole that reaches the nerve.
How many visits, how long
Root canal treatment usually takes two visits of about 60 minutes each. The first visit is the one you can book online. Some teeth need more than two visits, and Dr Tara will tell you after she has seen the X-ray.
What happens, step by step
- 1
Dr Tara examines the tooth and takes an X-ray. You see it on the screen and she explains what is happening.
- 2
You get a written estimate before treatment starts.
- 3
The tooth is numbed, and a small opening is made to reach the inside.
- 4
The infected tissue is cleaned out and the inside of the tooth is shaped.
- 5
A medicine is placed and the tooth is closed with a temporary filling.
- 6
At the second visit the inside is filled and sealed, and the tooth is restored with a filling or, if needed, a crown.
Aftercare
- The tooth can feel tender for a few days. A painkiller you have used safely before, taken as directed on the pack, usually helps.
- Avoid chewing hard food on that tooth until it has its final filling or crown.
- Keep the second appointment. The temporary filling is not meant to last.
- Call us if swelling or pain gets worse.
This is general information. Your dentist will tell you what applies to your own treatment.

Every day we're openQuestions
Is root canal treatment painful?
The tooth is numbed before we start, so the treatment itself should not hurt. Much of the pain people link to root canals comes from the infection, which the treatment is there to settle.
Why do I need a crown afterwards?
A tooth that has had a root canal can be more brittle. Dr Tara will tell you whether it needs a crown to protect it, and you will see the estimate in writing first.
Can I go to work the next day?
Most people can. Some tenderness for a few days is normal and usually settles with a painkiller you have used safely before.
