When you might need it

  • A tooth is too damaged to be repaired.
  • A tooth is loose because of gum disease.
  • A wisdom tooth keeps hurting, gets infected, or is damaging the tooth beside it.
  • Teeth need to be removed to make space before braces.

How many visits, how long

A simple tooth removal takes about 30 minutes. A wisdom tooth removal takes about 60 minutes and starts with a consultation and X-ray. Both are one visit plus a quick check afterwards.

What happens, step by step

  1. 1

Dr Tara examines the tooth and takes an X-ray if needed. You see it on the screen and she explains the options.

  2. 2

You get a written estimate if the cost is over ₹2,000.

  3. 3

The area is numbed. You feel pressure but should not feel pain.

  4. 4

The tooth is removed, and gauze is placed to control bleeding.

  5. 5

You get written instructions to take home.

  6. 6

A quick check a few days later makes sure the area is healing well.

Aftercare

  • Bite gently on the gauze for the time Dr Tara tells you, and don't spit or rinse hard on the first day.
  • Eat soft, lukewarm food and avoid hot drinks until the numbness has gone.
  • From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals.
  • Call us if bleeding doesn't stop, if swelling gets worse after the third day, or if you have a fever.

This is general information. Your dentist will tell you what applies to your own treatment.

Questions

Will I be awake during the removal?

Yes. The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure but should not feel pain.

Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?

No. Only those that cause problems, such as repeated pain, infection or damage to the tooth beside them. We start with a consultation and an X-ray.

When can I eat normally again?

Wait until the numbness has worn off, then eat soft, lukewarm food for the first day or two, chewing on the other side.
